Plans to use Hertfordshire County Showground as a park and ride for visitors to the Olympic Games have been approved.

A total of 2,745 spaces will be provided on the site at Redbourn, with 30 spaces allocated to blue badge-holders.

St Albans City and District Councillor Maxine Crawley said the move would benefit the local economy.

"There have already been enquiries at local hotels," she said.

"People will be travelling to the area from abroad and all over the country with a view to staying for a few days."

Shuttle buses will operate between 06:00 BST and midnight from 24 July until the close of the Games on 12 August.

The Olympic Delivery Authority said in a statement: "We are pleased that St Albans City and District Council has approved our planning application and we will now be taking forward our plans for the park-and-ride site.

"We will obviously be continuing to work closely with the landowner, local community and the council."
