Smoking in van in Milton Keynes costs man £745

A window fitter caught smoking in his van in Milton Keynes has been ordered to pay £745 by magistrates.

Graham Furniss, 48, of Kiln Way, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, had refused to pay a £50 on-the-spot fine in October.

He appeared at court in Milton Keynes and denied smoking in his work vehicle while carrying a passenger.

He was convicted on Thursday and given a £130 fine. He must also pay £615 costs.

Milton Keynes Council said two environmental health officers were on an unrelated operation with Thames Valley Police when they spotted Furniss in a work van, with a colleague, on 19 October last year.

He had the chance to reduce the initial fine to £30 if he paid within 15 days, but when he failed to pay he was charged under the Health Act 2006.

The council said it was the first prosecution of its kind that it had brought to court.

Smoking in the workplace, whether in a building or a vehicle used for work, has not been permitted since 2007.
