Plans for a £50m leisure development along the riverside in Bedford have been approved by a narrow majority by the borough council planning committee.

Work can now start on a cinema, restaurant and housing complex on the site of the former town hall.

The committee voted by five votes to four in favour of the development on Monday night, after considering more than 500 objections.

The project has been called the Riverside North development.
