Narrowboat owners woke up to find their vessels grounded after a "forgetful" person left a lock gate open, a canal manager said.

Boats were stranded on the bed of the Grand Union Canal at the Grove Lock Marina, in Leighton Buzzard.

Police and fire crews arrived at just after 04:00 GMT on Wednesday because the lock gate was opened in the night.

Lee King, of the Canal and River Trust, said: "It's like running the tap without putting the plug in."

The marina, where "several hundred" boats are usually moored, lies between Church Lock and Grove Lock.

Boat owners were woken by emergency services to find themselves well below the level of the jetties.

Mr King, the maintenance manager for the south east region, said: "Because I am quite kind I am guessing [someone] was a little forgetful, a little careless and left the paddles up at both ends which is like running the tap without putting the plug in."

Police are investigating.
