A woman had a "lucky" escape when a lorry crashed into a block of flats in Hertfordshire after the driver became ill while at the wheel.

The vehicle hit a telephone box and a post box before becoming embedded in the building in the High Street in Berkhamsted at about 07:00 BST.

A woman sleeping in the back bedroom of the flat which was hit was unhurt.

The driver was taken to hospital as a precaution, an East of England Ambulance spokesman said.

Paramedic officer Jim Wood said: "We carried out a number of checks on the [driver] and found that he needed to go to hospital as a precaution.

"Luckily the lady inside the property was sleeping in the back bedroom and was unharmed."
