The former fiancée of man shot in an alleged plot by a love rival to kill him told a jury she had lied to police over who had threatened him.

Nazeem Dadd was engaged to Atif Ali, 28, who told police he was threatened prior to the shooting by Shahzad Mahroof, 28, one of six men who deny conspiracy to murder.

She told Luton Crown Court she also named Mr Mahroof because she "wanted someone to blame".

Mr Ali was shot in Luton in May 2013.

The court was earlier told that Mr Mahroof bought a car which was deliberately crashed into Mr Ali's silver Audi at the junction of Leicester Road and Dunstable Road.

The victim was shot in his left thigh at close range when he got out to inspect the damage.

'Intent on relationship'

At the time of the shooting, Mr Mahroof was "intent on pursuing a relationship" with Miss Dadd even though her family disapproved of him, it is alleged.

Over nine years, they had twice blocked their marriage, and at the time of the shooting the pair were "friends".

The court had heard that a week before the attack Mr Ali was in his car with Miss Dadd when a man he thought was Mr Mahroof kicked and punched the car, saying: "I am going to get you shot".

Prosecutor Stuart Trimmer QC said Miss Dadd also told police Mr Mahroof made the threats.

But she claimed her family put pressure on her to implicate him and she had been "angry and shocked" and "wanted someone to blame".

She told the court she had not seen the face of the man who attacked the car or heard the threats.

Mr Trimmer said she was "now trying to save Shahzad Mahroof".

Mr Mahroof, of Selbourne Road, Luton, and Bernard Pillay, 41, of Campion Close, Uxbridge, who was allegedly the gunman, have admitted conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm.

Matthew McCafferty, 23, of Roman Way, Flitwick; Mark O'Neil, 41, of Lansbury Drive, Hayes; Mahmood Baig, 31, of Overstone Road, Luton and Sajad Hussain, 31, of Portland Road in the town have denied the charge.

The trial continues.
