A £12.5m leisure centre in Bedfordshire with a 25m swimming pool and four-court hall has been given the go-ahead.

Plans for the new Flitwick Leisure Centre in Steppingley Road were granted by Central Bedfordshire Council's development management committee.

The centre will include a dance studio, changing rooms and a 120-station gym.

It will be built on football pitches next to the current centre, which will be replaced with 72 homes after outline planning permission was also granted.

Councillor Ian Dalgarno, deputy executive member for community services, said: "This is a really exciting milestone in getting a new leisure centre up and running in Flitwick, opening up all sorts of physical activity opportunities.

"We're working hard to get a contractor in place to build the centre and if everything goes as planned, we'll be able to start work in the autumn."

It is hoped the centre could be finished in winter 2015.
