A masked raider thought to be carrying a gun fled with a "substantial" amount of money after "terrifying" a shop worker in Bedfordshire.

The female worker opened the back door at Dillon's Newsagents in Wootton when a man burst in and demanded the safe to be opened.

After stealing the money he ran off. The robbery happened at about 07:45 BST in Cause End Road on Monday.

Police have released CCTV in the hope the man may be recognised.

He was wearing a mask and a distinctive hooded top, with two stripes down the arm and the number 53 on the front. He also arrived on a silver and red mountain bike.

Det Insp Jerry Waite, of Bedfordshire Police, said: "This was a terrifying experience for the member of staff who feared that she was going to be seriously harmed if she did not empty the safe.

"Wootton is a close-knit community and I hope that someone will recognise the clothing being worn or the bike being ridden by the offender who escaped with a substantial amount of cash."
