A man has died in a fire after his car hit the central reservation of the A1(M) between Hatfield and Welwyn Garden City, police said.

The Vauxhall Zafira was being driven by a 48-year-old man, who has not been named, along the southbound carriageway about 12:20 BST.

For reasons "not yet known" it hit the reservation between junctions six and five, said a police spokesman.

Police said the man's next of kin have been informed.

Sgt Pete Scholes, from the Beds, Cambs and Herts Road Policing Unit, said: "We would like to speak to anyone who saw the collision or who saw this car driving south on the A1(M) before the collision occurred, but who has not yet spoken to police.

"We would also like to speak to anyone who possibly saw the car stopped on the hard shoulder around junction six sometime before the collision."
