A Buckinghamshire hospital has launched an internal inquiry after the body of a missing patient suffering from dementia was found.

Police found the body of Violet Burton, 79, near Lower Road, Stoke Mandeville, on Tuesday.

She was last seen leaving Stoke Mandeville Hospital the previous day.

A Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust spokesman said: "Our staff have been extremely saddened by the death of Mrs Burton and a review has begun."

Her death was being treated as unexplained but not suspicious, police said.

The trust said: "Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with her family at this very difficult time.

"We respect the family's privacy and it would be inappropriate for us to share information about any care Mrs Burton was receiving.

"As is normal practice we are undertaking our own internal review."
