A man has been charged with murdering a man at a travellers' site where they both lived.

Patrick Maloney, 43, died as a result of "multiple crushing injuries" after he was hit by a vehicle at Toddbury Farm, Slapton Road, Little Billington, near Leighton Buzzard on Tuesday.

Police said Thomas McCarthy, 24, of Toddbury Farm, would appear at Luton Magistrates' Court on Saturday.

Mr Maloney's wife described him as a "gentle giant".

"I'm devastated at the loss of my husband, my best friend and a wonderful father to our three boys. All of our hearts are broken," she said.

Bedfordshire Police said a post-mortem examination showed the victim died as a result of injuries "consistent with being involved in a collision with a vehicle".

The force was leaving the crime scene in Little Billington, but work was still ongoing to "piece together the events which led up to Mr Maloney's death".

A 42-year-old woman who was also arrested on suspicion of murder has been bailed.
