Murder charge after Hemel Hempstead fatal collision

A man has been charged with murder following a collision in which a pedestrian died.

Natalie Hastings, from Hemel Hempstead, was hit by a grey Volvo before the car struck a shop in the town's Queensway at about 00:10 GMT on Monday.

Simon Whittle, 48, of Fletcher Way in the town was charged after the 41-year-old died from her injuries on Tuesday.

Ms Hastings' family paid tribute to "an amazing daughter, sister, aunty and granddaughter".

Their statement added: "To the world she was like sunshine on a rainy day. She was the life and soul of our hearts.

"To the girl that always put others first, you'll be missed eternally but your memory will always live on. We love you always and forever, your family."

Mr Whittle, who has also been charged with assaulting a police officer and criminal damage to police property, has been remanded in custody by magistrates ahead of appearing at St Albans Crown Court on Friday.

He was originally arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
