Maidenhead credit union service launched

A credit union service to help people avoid loan sharks and high interest rates has been launched in Maidenhead.

The move is part of plans to expand the scheme across Berkshire. It began in Reading in 2007.

An office in the Citizens Advice Bureau in Marlow Road, Maidenhead, will offer telephone, online and face-to-face help every Thursday.

Volunteers are being sought to help run the service for five days a week and set up offices in other areas.

As part of the expansion, the credit union name has also been replaced by Berkshire Community Savings and Loans.

Councillor Richard Kellaway, member for finance at Windsor and Maidenhead council, said: "When things are tough it's all too easy to fall into the hands of loan sharks and organisations that prey on the vulnerable.

"We will be offering a reliable, ethical affordable savings and loans service which will bring residents together to work for the benefit of the community."
