Berkshire MP Richard Benyon has called for a ban on 80p drinks promotions in Liquid nightclubs.

The Conservative MP wrote to the chain's chief executive after a teenager was hit on the head with a bottle outside the Liquid club in Newbury last month.

The club, which had been holding an 80p drink promotion, closed early due to town centre disorder.

Newbury's Liquid nightclub said it had since stopped the drinks promotions.

'Held accountable'

However the entertainment group Luminar, which owns the chain of nightclubs, has yet to respond to Mr Benyon, and told the BBC it did not want to comment.

Mr Benyon said the Liquid nightclub venue was "popular" and had been in the town centre a long time but he thought there was an alcohol pricing issue.

He said he "questioned the morality" of a company willing to have such a drinks promotion.

"They need to be held accountable for the effect they have on town centres," he said.
