The leader of the Conservative group in Reading has announced he will step down to become a backbench councillor.

Andrew Cumpsty said he had been given a "great opportunity" at work, which meant he would have less time to devote to politics.

The Conservatives went into opposition this year at Reading Borough Council, having previously been in power in a coalition with the Liberal Democrats.

Mr Cumpsty said it was time for someone else to "take up the torch".
