A new Berkshire town centre shopping development has opened.

Parkway, in the centre of Newbury, is one of just three major centres to open this year in the UK, according to a retail report.

The development includes a shopping area and 147 apartments, 37 of them designated as "affordable".

West Berkshire Council says the development will provide a major boost for shopping in the region.

Retailers to open stores at the site include John Lewis, Marks and Spencer and Debenhams.

In total, 30 shops are eventually planned for the development, located between Northbrook Street and Park Way.

According to a 2011 report from leisure and retail advisor BCSC Lunson Mitchenall, three major shopping centres opened in 2011, compared to 20 centres in the 18 months between 2008 and 2009.

None are planned for 2012.
