Pet chickens stolen from Reading primary school

Five chickens which were hand-reared from eggs by primary school children have been stolen from the school.

CCTV images showed a man entering the Ridgeway Primary School in Reading with a rucksack on Saturday at about 14:30 and stealing the chickens.

Deputy head Naomi Tate called the theft a "tragedy" which had left the pupils "devastated" and said she suspected the birds, kept as pets, had been killed.

Thames Valley Police said they were reviewing the CCTV footage.

They appealed for witnesses and said the man was white, in his late teens or early 20s and wearing dark trousers, trainers and a khaki-coloured jacket with the hood up.

Pupils had named the chickens and looked after them on a daily rota.

Parents and helpers had also volunteered their weekends and school holidays to care for the pets.
