Maidenhead sheltered housing complex evacuated during fire

Residents were rescued by firefighters after a fire broke out in a sheltered housing complex in Maidenhead.

More than 30 elderly residents were evacuated from Brill House in Mercia Road in the early hours of Thursday.

A Royal Berkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesman said: "At this stage it is believed that no residents suffered any injury from the fire or evacuation."

It is believed to have started on the ground floor before spreading to the first floor and roof.

Brill House serves as sheltered accommodation for the elderly and consists of 30 flats over two floors.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.
