A couple have denied abandoning their baby daughter on the doorstep of a priest's house in Berkshire.

Polish nationals Tomasz Grzonka and Elzbieta Romanowicz are accused of leaving two-and-a-half week old Amelia in a holdall bag on 3 May in Reading.

She was found outside the London Road presbytery of the Polish Church of the Sacred Heart.

Mr Grzonka, 26, and Ms Romanowicz, 18, denied one count of cruelty to a person under 16 at Reading Crown Court.

They do not speak English and were assisted by an interpreter during the hearing.

The couple were released on bail on the condition they remain in the UK. They are to stand trial at Reading Crown Court on 3 December.

Amelia, who was found by Father Edward Stachurski, was taken into care by social services.
