Reading children rescued in suspected arson

Two children were among four people rescued from a suspected arson at a block of flats in Reading.

The fire at Bamburgh Close, Whitley Wood, on Tuesday at about 18:00 GMT caused one adult to jump from the first floor before fire crews arrived.

Firefighters led the children and two adults to safety by ladder from the first floor.

A 17-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy have been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to Redesdale Court after reports of a fire in the ground floor stairwell.

One other adult was rescued by crews from the stairwell and a further five were led to safety from the first and second floors.

Three suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital but the fire was under control by 19:48 GMT.

Station commander Jess James said the service was "working closely" with Thames Valley Police to investigate the cause of the fire.
