A large blaze has broken out at a property in Pangbourne.

The fire started at about 17:45 BST in a car mechanics garage in Bourne Road. Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes and roads were shut.

Eyewitness David Stevens said when he looked out of the window "he could see lots of black smoke from the area".

The South Central Ambulance Service said paramedics treated one person at the scene but they did not need to be taken to hospital.

Berkshire Fire & Rescue said six crews were involved and that the cause of the blaze was not yet known.

Mr Stevens said he had gone outside to check the fire was not at his aunt's house and then discovered it was the garage on fire "with flames starting to appear out of it very quickly".

He said firefighters dealt with the blaze "remarkably quickly" and that residents had feared there were gas cylinders and chemicals inside the burning building.

Police closed a section of the A329 Reading Road but have since reopened it.
