Sponsor needed for Newbury planned academy school

Potential sponsors are being sought to run a new primary school as a council tackles a shortage of pupil places.

West Berkshire Council identified the Newbury College Monks Lane site as a potential location for the school, which would grow to take 210 children.

Academy sponsors are responsible for the performance and finances of a school and recruiting the headteacher.

The school will have a 26-place nursery. Interested parties have until 15 November to submit their proposals.

The council said any building designs would be "future proofed" to enable the school to expand to up to 630 places and 52 nursery places to meet demand.

It is hoped the school will open in September 2016, admitting up to 26 children into the nursery, 30 reception children, 15 into Year 1 and 15 into Year 2.

Academy sponsors can be high-performing schools, further education colleges, sixth-form colleges, universities, businesses and entrepreneurs, educational foundations, charities and philanthropists, and faith communities.
