Woman jumps into Kennet and Avon canal to escape knifeman

A woman jumped into a canal in Reading to escape a stranger who threatened to kill her with a knife.

The 30-year-old woman was walking near Fobney Lock, off Island Road, when a man approached her between 15:30 and 15:45 GMT on Tuesday.

He produced a knife and made threats to kill her unless she came with him.

Thames Valley Police said he is white, slim, about 30 years old, 1.65m to 1.68 (5ft 5in to 5ft 6in) tall with short brown hair and blue eyes.

He also has thin lips and was clean shaven.

He was wearing a brown jacket with no hood, a grey polo shirt, jeans and lace-up trainers with blue detail.

The man ran off when the woman jumped into the Kennet and Avon canal.

The woman was not injured, police said.
