Pedestrian dies in M4 crash near Reading

A pedestrian died when he was hit by a car on the M4 between Reading and Maidenhead.

It happened near roadworks on the eastbound carriageway between junction 10 and junction 8/9, on Friday.

A woman driver involved in the crash reported it to the emergency services. It is not known why the man, who died at the scene, was in the carriageway.

Motorists had been warned to expect long delays earlier due to a lane closure, which has since been lifted.

Det Insp Andy Shearwood, from Thames Valley Police, said: "We are trying to establish the exact circumstances of why the man was in the carriageway.

"At this time it appears that he did not have a broken down vehicle further along the motorway nor was he part of the team carrying out the roadworks."
