A car transporter overturned on the A34 in Berkshire, causing long delays for motorists.

The lorry crashed on the northbound carriageway near East Ilsley, shortly before 08:30 GMT.

Police closed the road northbound from the M4 at Chieveley, diverting traffic via Wantage. One lane of the southbound carriageway was also closed.

The Highways Agency said the road was not expected to reopen fully until about 22:00.

Thames Valley Police said the driver of the transporter was not thought to have been seriously injured.

Motorists were being advised to plan for longer journey times and find alternative routes.

The transporter was fully laden, carrying seven vans, many of which were strewn across the carriageway.

A police spokesman said: "The collision damaged part of the central reservation... and extensive recovery services were required.

"Additionally, repairs will have to be carried out to the central reservation before the carriageways can be reopened."
