Waltham St Lawrence Gypsy campsite 'cannot be cleared yet'

An illegal camp on Berkshire's green belt cannot be cleared yet because of a court injunction, the council has said.

The High Court has refused the Gypsy families at Shurlock Road, Waltham St Lawrence, permission to appeal against a decision to refuse a judicial review.

But an injunction preventing the council clearing the site has been extended until an application is determined by the Court of Appeal.

The site has been occupied without planning permission since 2009.

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead cannot take direct action until seven days after the court's determination.

Lawyers representing the families argued the decision to take direct action to clear the site was "perverse".

Derek Wilson, cabinet member for planning at The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, said: "We still can't take direct action as the legal process continues.

"But we will continue to follow the correct procedures to ensure that this unauthorised occupation of Green Belt land is ended and the site returned to its original condition."

The council has set aside £300,000 in its bid to evict about 10 families.
