A restaurant's bid to open a lap dancing club in its basement has been rejected on the grounds it would not be in keeping with the area.

Reading Borough Council cited the proximity of Chronicles in Valpy Street to cultural landmarks such as Reading Abbey and Forbury Gardens.

The restaurant argued lap dancing would be a secondary part of the business.

Licensing committee members disagreed and rejected plans to reopen the restaurant which closed in November.

Ward councillors and a number of local businesses, including a nearby children's day nursery, had objected to the application.

The owners stated they would limit capacity in the basement lap dancing club to 20 people and maintain the ground floor area as a restaurant.
