A woman has died and a four-year-old child remains in a critical condition after a three-vehicle crash on the M4 near Newbury.

Police said a Volkswagen Touran, Jaguar XF and van collided on Sunday night near Membury Services.

The 36-year-old woman, a passenger in the Touran, died at the scene. The four-year-old was in the same car.

The Touran driver suffered serious injuries, and a two-year-old, also in the car, sustained minor injuries.

The driver and passenger of the Jaguar were released with minor injuries, as were the two occupants of the van, police said.

The Thames Valley force has appealed for witnesses to come forward.
