A man was run over and beaten unconscious after confronting two people he believed shot his nine-year-old son with a BB gun, police said.

The boy was fired at from a car in Woolhampton, Berkshire, before his 41-year-old father tracked the suspected offenders down in nearby Bucklebury.

He was then hit by a car on Pease Hill and punched and kicked.

A 19-year-old man and 17-year-old boy were arrested on suspicion of GBH and have been released under investigation.

The nine-year-old was uninjured in the attack, which happened at about 18:10 BST on Tuesday.

His father, who was found unconscious with cuts and bruises, was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital. He has since been discharged.

PC Teresa Miller, of Thames Valley Police, described what happened as a "serious crime" which had been "very distressing" for the victims.

The force launched a witness appeal on Thursday.
