Four crashes at icy location in Birmingham

A man was taken to hospital after four crashes on an icy stretch of road in Birmingham.

A broken pipe had appeared to spread water in Tyburn Road, Erdington. The water had frozen into black ice over about 300m, the ambulance service said.

The man, in his 20s, who had back pain, was taken to City Hospital after a car turned over at the scene.

A car hit a lamppost, a van crashed and a fourth car rolled over. The men driving those vehicles were unhurt.

West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to the road just after 0600 GMT.
