Robbers break into Birmingham Tesco through ceiling
A group of three people armed with crowbars attempted to rob a shop in Kingstanding, in Birmingham.
A police spokesman said the group had broken in through the ceiling of the Tesco Express store on Hawthorn Road and demanded access to the safe.
He said although no cash was taken, the staff were left badly shaken and one had a mobile phone stolen.
West Midlands Police said it was not clear if the masked robbers were male or female.
The store remains closed while officers speak to witnesses and await the arrival of specialist forensic investigators.
Police were alerted to the incident at about 0530 GMT by a member of staff who dialled 999 after the would-be robbers fled.
He added officers were immediately dispatched and conducted an extensive search of the area but the offenders were nowhere to be found.
Police are now appealing for witnesses.
