Woman hurt in police car accident in Handsworth

A 79-year-old woman is in hospital after being knocked down by a police patrol car in Birmingham.

The vehicle was on a routine patrol when the accident happened on the junction of Rookery Road and Newcombe Road in Handsworth on Friday.

West Midlands Police said the matter had been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission and a full investigation had been launched.

The woman is in a stable condition in hospital, a spokesman added.

The incident occurred at about 1535 GMT.

A family liaison officer has been appointed to support the woman's family, police said.

Insp Mick Hartill said "Our thoughts are with the casualty and her family at this time.

"We are currently looking into the incident to ascertain exactly what has happened.

"We are offering our full support and assistance to the lady and her family."
