Man dies in flat fire in Loxley Road, Smethwick

A man has died in a fire that broke out in a flat in the West Midlands.

Emergency services were called to the fire which was in a first-floor flat in Loxley Road, Smethwick, at about 2240 BST on Tuesday.

An ambulance service spokesman said: "On arrival at the scene crews found a serious fire in a first-floor flat.

"Unfortunately, a man was found inside the flat and it became apparent that nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene."

The spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service added that no-one else was injured in the fire.

West Midlands Police and the fire service are investigating the cause of the fire.

A spokesman for the police said the man's identity was yet to be confirmed.

He added: "At this stage it is not known how the fire started and enquiries into the cause are continuing today."
