Murder investigation begins after Edgbaston shooting

A murder inquiry has begun after a man was shot dead in Birmingham.

Officers were called to reports of a shooting in Melville Road, Edgbaston, at 2213 BST on Tuesday.

The man was found lying in the street with a gunshot wound and was confirmed dead at the scene.

He has not been formally identified but a murder inquiry has been started. West Midlands Police said: "Local people should be reassured this type of crime is not commonplace in Edgbaston."

Reassurance patrols are being conducted in the area and part of the road has been cordoned off for forensic investigations.

Anyone with information should contact West Midlands Police or call Crimestoppers anonymously.
