University of Birmingham in £175m scheme plans
Plans to transform the University of Birmingham's Edgbaston campus in a £175m scheme have been announced.
A new sports centre, including a 50m swimming pool and a new library, were among the proposals.
The project is subject to planning permission from the city council, but the university hoped it will be completed by the end of 2015.
Local people can give their views at two events at the university on 19 August and 16 September.
A more detailed consultation will take place in the autumn.
The university said the proposed library development would provide facilities for students and researchers, as well as a cultural hub for the university and the city.
The plans were also designed to help amateur sports clubs that use the university, but the new sports centre will not be open for the 2012 Olympics.
University director of estates Ian Barker said: "A number of developments, like the proposed new sports centre, swimming pool and the cultural hub, focus on facilities that will benefit the community as well as staff and students."
