Peel Centre retail park 'arson' destroys furniture warehouse

A large fire at a retail park in Wolverhampton has destroyed 75% of a furniture store and damaged two other stores in a suspected arson attack.

Officers discovered the fire at a furniture warehouse clearance centre in Stafford Street when they responded to an intruder alarm at about 00:30 BST.

Smoke damage at the Peel Centre retail park also spread to Harveys The Furniture Store and JJB Sports.

At its peak 15 crews tackled the fire, which was put out by sunrise.

The Peel Centre has been cordoned off for fire investigators and traffic was diverted along Waterloo Road past the Molineux Stadium until Stafford Road reopened at about 07:15 BST.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "Initial inquiries conducted by the fire investigation team suggest arson is the likely cause of the fire."

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact West Midlands Police or to call Crimestoppers anonymously.
