An elderly man has died following a house fire in Wolverhampton.

Emergency services were called to a residential property in Castlecroft Road shortly before 04:00 BST.

West Midlands Police said the man, who was believed to have been in his 80s, was confirmed dead at the scene and was yet to be formally identified.

Det Insp Bob Brown said police were "keeping an open mind" about the circumstances surrounding the fire and appealed for the public's help.

"The Castlecroft road is a main arterial road and we would urge anyone who was in the area in the early hours of this morning to contact us if they saw anything suspicious," he said.

Police are working with fire service investigators to establish the cause of the fire.
