Man critical as Portobello groups clash on New Year's Day

An 18-year-old man is critically ill in hospital after two groups clashed outside a Black Country pub in the early hours on New Year's Day.

He had been at the Royal Oak on Vaughan Road in Portobello, when there was an argument near the pub while the victim and his friends waited for a taxi.

West Midlands Police believe the man, from the Great Barr area, was hit with a bottle and assaulted on the floor.

The argument happened outside the pub at just after 04:30 GMT.
