Probe into West Midlands Police Christmas Day arrest

Claims police used excessive force against a man arrested in Birmingham on Christmas Day are being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

The watchdog has followed up complaints that the man was slapped, strip searched, and left naked in a cell.

The 28-year-old was later found unconscious and taken to hospital.

He was released without charge after the victim of an alleged assault chose not to pursue the matter.

The IPCC said it believed the man had sustained some minor bruising.

West Midlands Police referred the complaint to the IPCC on 30 December.

Investigators are looking at CCTV footage from the custody suite.

IPCC Commissioner Rachel Cerfontyne said: "While the man's injuries were minor, the allegations made against a number of police officers about his treatment while in custody are serious and it is right that we carry out an independent investigation."
