M42 crash between lorry and car kills elderly man

An 84-year-old man man has died after a crash between a car and a lorry on the M42 in the West Midlands.

Police said it happened at 04:25 GMT and that the car driver from Wakefield, in West Yorkshire, was taken to Heartlands Hospital where he died.

Police said the lorry driver, a 39-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent, was taken to hospital suffering from shock and was later discharged.

He was spoken to by officers, but not arrested, police said.

The M42 northbound between junctions 5 and 6 was closed for five hours.

Insp Mark Watkins, from West Midlands Police, said: "We are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the silver Chevrolet in the seconds and minutes before the collision."
