Pregnant Birmingham care worker kicked during break-in

A pregnant care worker was kicked in the stomach as she fought to detain a suspected burglar.

A woman was spotted by staff at a residential home in Kingstanding as she climbed through an open window early on Thursday morning.

Police said they were called at about 01:20 BST and arrested a 30-year-old woman on suspicion of burglary.

They said the care worker, who was three months pregnant, was treated at the scene, but not taken to hospital.

West Midlands Police said it was thought the intruder was attempting to steal a handbag belonging to the home's manager, which had been left in the communal lounge.

Det Sgt Stephen Comley said: "We"re grateful to the care home staff who reacted quickly and bravely to apprehend the intruder and certainly helped police make a swift arrest.

"However, members of the public should only ever intervene if they are 100% comfortable and confident in their ability to handle the situation."
