Police have been given more time to question a man and woman arrested after a baby girl was found badly injured at the bottom of a rubbish chute in Wolverhampton.

Wolverhampton magistrates extended the time the couple can be held until Wednesday afternoon, police said.

West Midlands Police said officers were called to a flat in Boscobel Crescent on Saturday evening.

The baby is in a critical condition in Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Police said a 24-year-old woman has been detained on suspicion of attempted murder and a 32-year-old man is being questioned on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Det Insp John Smith said: "We are making a number of enquiries to establish how this young baby has come to sustain her injuries, and how she came to be found in the refuse area of the flats."
