Two people have been arrested by police investigating the death of a woman in a house fire in Birmingham.

Nusarat Bugum, 36, was killed in a suspected arson attack on a property in Speedwell Road, Edgbaston just before 07:00 GMT on Monday.

A 38-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man were arrested on Monday on suspicion of murder and are due to be questioned, police said.

Three other people were injured as they tried to escape from the house.

A man, 34, and two women, aged 55 and 23, remain in hospital, although their injuries are not life threatening, West Midlands Police said.

Det Ch Insp Sab Johal, who is is leading the investigation, said officers had been called after reports of people trapped in the house and jumping from the upper floors of the house to escape the fire.

Officers said Ms Bugum, who arrived in the city from Pakistan six months ago, was believed to have been staying with friends when the fire broke out.

Police said initial indications suggested the fire had been lit near the front door and they were investigating whether the property had been deliberately targeted.
