A woman has died after falling from a third-floor balcony inside Birmingham's Bullring shopping centre, police have said.

West Midlands Police said emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 13:30 GMT.

The incident shut the East Mall of the shopping centre, but it has since reopened.

Police said the death of the woman, believed to be in her 40s, was not being treated as suspicious.

The death has now been referred to the coroner, a spokesman said.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said emergency treatment was given at the scene by an off duty doctor and ambulance crews.

The woman was taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital but was confirmed dead shortly after arrival, a spokesman said.

The East Mall, which is at the Selfridges end of the shopping centre, was initially evacuated.

The mall opened about one hour later, but a small section remained cordoned off by police tape.

A woman who had been in one of the restaurants on the ground floor at the time said: "Staff were very slick and very quick and explained what they wanted us to do.

"They acted professionally to maintain the dignity of the person involved."
