A tram system that connects Wolverhampton with Birmingham has reopened after a two-week revamp.

The work has seen platforms altered at stations on the Midland Metro to accommodate 20 new, larger trams.

Centro said these trams, due to come into service next year, are expected to help increase capacity by 40%.

The improvements are part of wider plans to extend the line from Birmingham's Snow Hill to New Street station from 2015.

The project has been part-funded by the government and also includes a maintenance depot in Wednesbury.

It will be the first time trams have operated in Birmingham city centre since 1953.
