A driver who killed three passengers when he smashed his car into a tree in Birmingham has been jailed for nine years.

Ben Thomas, 26, of Princethorpe Road, Weoley Castle, was twice the drink-drive limit when his car crashed on Bristol Road in October last year.

Two of his passengers, James MacDonald and James Wassell, both 24, died at the scene.

Another passenger, David Wassell, 26, died in hospital the following morning.

Thomas pleaded guilty to three charges of causing death by dangerous driving and three counts of causing death while uninsured.

West Midlands Police said the "slowing speed" of Thomas's car was 73 mph at the time it hit the tree. The speed limit was 40 mph.

He was also handed a 10-year driving ban when he was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court.
