A survey of firms in the Birmingham area has suggested the region's economy is improving.

The Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce quizzed around 400 businesses about their performance between October and December last year.

Out of 114 manufacturing firms, 44% said trade had improved, 15% said it was down and 41% said it was the same.

In services, 48% out of 278 firms said trade was up compared with 8% who said it was down.

Chamber president Tim Pile said: "The upward trend in the fortunes of the region's businesses is hugely encouraging for 2014."
