Police shoot 'aggressive' escaped dog dead in Bearwood

Armed police have shot dead one of two "aggressive" dogs after the animals apparently escaped in Birmingham.

Richmond Road in Bearwood was sealed off following reports two "pit bull-type" dogs were loose at 16:00 GMT.

Specialist dog handlers tried to contain the dogs but called a firearms unit to the scene when the animals were deemed too aggressive, police said.

One dog was shot dead while the other was taken to the force dog unit after being found in a garden nearby.

West Midlands Police said it had tried to capture both dogs alive could not due to their aggressive behaviour.

It said officers were interviewing residents on Richmond Road as part of an ongoing investigation.
