Bike rental scheme opens in Birmingham city centre
A bicycle rental scheme open to Birmingham commuters, residents and visitors has begun operating in the city centre.
People are able to rent one of 20 Brompton folding bikes from Birmingham Moor Street Station after registering for the scheme.
Docking stations will also be installed near Snow Hill and New Street stations.
The £140,000 project was set up by Centro, the city council and train operator London Midland.
It is similar to other projects which have seen bicycle schemes introduced across the UK, including in Manchester, Oxford and Exeter.
Public transport co-ordinator Centro said after registering online, cyclists are sent a pin code which allows them to access the bikes.
Rental is £2.50 a day for regular users or £5 for occasional users.
The council said the facility at Moor Street was the first in the West Midlands and built on wider investment in improving cycling facilities.
Councillor Lisa Trickett said: "The arrival of the Brompton Docks to Birmingham underlines the importance we are now placing on cycling being a key part of the transport mix in the city."
Cycle Hubs, which store commuters' own bicycles and include CCTV, have also opened at several stations.
