A care worker has appeared in court charged with attempted murder after staff and residents of a sheltered housing complex were taken ill.

Melissa Swift, 23, of Hambletts Road, West Bromwich, was remanded in custody at Sandwell Magistrates' Court.

She will appear at Birmingham Crown Court on 17 September for a committal hearing.

Sixteen people at Goldfield Court in West Bromwich suffered food poisoning-like symptoms in August, police said.

Several required hospital treatment, but all those taken ill have made a good recovery, police said.

Ms Swift also faces a further charge of making threats to kill.
